the rand introduced in union of south africa on 14 february 1961, shortly before establishment of republic on 31 may 1961. coins bore forward-facing portrait of jan van riebeeck on obverse.
the initial circulation coins of republic following:
⁄2 cent (approximately replaced ⁄2d)
1 cent (approximately replaced 1d)
2 ⁄2 cents (replaced 3d)
5 cents (replaced 6d)
10 cents (replaced 1s)
20 cents (replaced 2s)
50 cents (replaced 5s)
the coins had same size former south african coins. except ⁄2 , 1 cent coins in silver. previous south african farthing coin (¼d) , half-a-crown ( 2 ⁄2s) not continued in decimal currency.
in addition, 2 bullion coins denominations of 1 rand , 2 rand issued, replacing gold half-pound , pound coins introduced in 1952. both pound , rand gold coins matched specifications of british half-sovereign , sovereign (minted, among others, @ pretoria branch mint until 1932), including gold alloy (crown gold) fineness of 22 carat (91.67%). reverse of gold rand coins features well-known springbok illustration designed coert steynberg 5-shilling coin introduced in 1948.
