a week prior opening of film tabu, murnau drove pacific coast highway los angeles, california in hired rolls-royce. young driver, 14-year-old filipino servant, crashed car against electric pole. murnau hit head , died in hospital next day, in nearby santa barbara, before premiere of last film.


murnau entombed in southwest cemetery in stahnsdorf (südwest-kirchhof stahnsdorf) near berlin. 11 people attended funeral. among them robert j. flaherty, emil jannings, greta garbo , fritz lang, delivered eulogy. garbo commissioned death mask of murnau, kept on desk during years in hollywood.


in july 2015 murnau s grave broken into, remains disturbed , skull removed persons unknown. wax residue reportedly found @ site, leading speculate candles had been lit, perhaps occult or ceremonial significance. disturbance not isolated incident, cemetery managers considering sealing grave.
