during great war, before united states entered war, group of students went france serve marietta college volunteer ambulance corps. after war, france commemorated service known french monument, gave city of marietta. monument has 2 parts: replica of historic 1749 plaque found buried @ site, noted french claim ohio country, , plaque commemorate ambulance corps. names of young men served corps included.
