historically preceded community s muskingum academy, established in 1797, today s college chartered in 1835 , first president rev. joel h. linsley. in years before civil war, students absorbed city s ethic of supporting abolitionism. helped fugitive slaves take shelter @ college, used station on underground railroad slaves reach freedom in northern states or canada.


during great war, before united states entered war, group of students went france serve marietta college volunteer ambulance corps. after war, france commemorated service known french monument, gave city of marietta. monument has 2 parts: replica of historic 1749 plaque found buried @ site, noted french claim ohio country, , plaque commemorate ambulance corps. names of young men served corps included.


in 21st century, majority of students @ college ohio, pennsylvania , west virginia, sizable portion of student population new england states, , asia.
