prologue


the pyrenees mountains. pedro meets nando, , tells him has dreamed of meeting beautiful woman wife. sebastiano, accompanied tommaso, brings marta pedro , informs him must come down lowlands marry , become miller. marta reluctant @ pedro.


act i


the interior of village mill. moruccio , servants gossip marta, girls hinting moruccio hoped marry marta himself. nuri reveals marta married shepherd , reveals has overheard conversation between sebastiano , marta did not understand, others comprehend reveals relationship. pedro arrives @ mill, marriage take place. not knowing marta sebastiano s mistress, puzzled why villagers making fun of him. moruccio reveals background tommaso, angered , seeks confront sebastiano. confrontation in tomasso backed moruccio leads moruccio s dismissal. after wedding, marta, fears sebastiano carry out intention of coming night, not go chamber nor accompanies pedro, puzzles him more.


act ii


the interior of village mill. marta beginning fall in love pedro. however, unable stand teasing , persecution of villagers, tells going mountains. begs him take him , tells him truth , sebastiano. in jealous rage, pedro advances towards knife, but, overcome remorse , love her, decides take him. sebastiano enters villagers , makes advances marta. pedro furiously objects , dragged outside.


act iii


the interior of village mill. sebastiano has been rejected heiress whom had hoped marry , again makes advances marta. calls pedro help. rushes @ sebastiano knife, seeing unarmed, throws knife down , strangles him. carrying marta in arms, pedro exclaims villagers: far up, far in mountains! sunshine , freedom , light. , marta escape mountains.
