the defending world series champions got off slow start in 1978, prompting owner george steinbrenner put pressure on manager billy martin. compounding issue already-tumultuous relationship between martin , reggie jackson, , steinbrenner pressuring him well. on july 17, team @ 47-42 , in fourth place in american league east, came head during home contest kansas city royals. score tied 5-5 in bottom of 10th inning , thurman munson on first, martin sent jackson plate orders lay down sacrifice bunt. jackson tried bunt first pitch, failed. martin relayed third-base coach dick howser jackson swing , howser passed on, jackson ignored howser , attempted bunt. howser called time , talked jackson, no avail. on final bunt attempt, jackson fouled out catcher. martin removed jackson game , suspended him 5 games.


as jackson s suspension ending, martin commented in later post-game interview (referring jackson , steinbrenner, respectively) 1 s born liar, , other s convicted. steinbrenner reference alluding past incident yankee owner made illegal u.s. presidential campaign contributions. later, martin appeared on live television , tearfully announced resignation yankees manager, sources believed fired steinbrenner convicted comment. howser acting manager next few games until bob lemon named manager rest of season.


however, on august 5 @ yankee stadium, during old-timer s day ceremony, yankee public address announcer bob sheppard introduced martin crowd , announced martin return manager 1980 season.


nevertheless, under lemon, yankees went on tear rest of season , won division after having been 14 games out of first @ 1 point. go on repeat world series champions.
