this group of kigo modern invention. before japan began using gregorian calendar in 1873, japanese new year @ beginning of spring.


the season

japanese new year (正月 shōgatsu) * in many other cultures, japanese new year important time of year celebrations , there many activities associated may mentioned in haiku, including firsts : first sun (hatsuhi), first laughter ( hatsuwarai or waraizome), , first calligraphy (kakizome). there new year s day (ganjitsu).

osechi (traditional japanese new year s day food): zōni * (a traditional vegetable broth mochi—sticky rice cakes), 7 herbs (nanakusa) , rice porridge 7 herbs (nanakusa gayu), eaten in evening of 7 january.
