adderbury west manor house
near st mary s tithe barn built new college, oxford. in 1970s jennifer sherwood dated 14th century english heritage dates earliest parts of building 1422. walls of ashlar marlstone , roof of stonesfield slate. in 17th century barn reduced present length of 5 bays , partly rebuilt. in 1877 altered lawrence palk, 1st baron haldon. barn has similarities tithe barns @ swalcliffe , upper heyford, both of built new college in 15th century. because of post-medieval alterations grade ii listed building.
adderbury house country house in east adderbury built in 17th century. owned henry wilmot, 1st earl of rochester, fought on royalist side during english civil war. wilmot cavalry commander prince rupert of rhine, , both men kept troops @ adderbury house. poet anne wharton, wife of whig politician thomas wharton, 1st marquess of wharton, died there in 1685.
adderbury house has been remodelled several times: in 1661 anne wilmot, countess of rochester, in 1722 john campbell, 2nd duke of argyll, in 1731 architect roger morris , in 1768 architect sir william chambers henry scott, 3rd duke of buccleuch. of house demolished in 1808.
in 19th century, adderbury house owned major larnach. when adderbury-trained horse jeddah won derby @ odds of 100–1 , won @ ascot, major paid building of village institute. opened in 1898 , has been setting of countless village events since, ranging instruction , sewing meetings present-day activities.
adderbury noted many honey-coloured limestone cottages , houses in older parts of village. east adderbury s manor house 16th century , features diamond-patterned brick chimney-stacks. grange, in east adderbury, built john bloxham of banbury sir thomas cobb, first baronet, of banbury, in 1684.
clockmakers
adderbury s quaker community included number of clockmakers. richard gilkes (1715–87) son of thomas gilkes of sibford gower. richard apprenticed father , started own business in adderbury east in 1736. gilkes prolific clockmaker until 1770s , maintained turret clock of st mary virgin parish church 1747 until 1786.
joseph williams (1762–1835) lived in adderbury east , traded 1788. williams made longcase clocks , succeeded richard gilkes in maintenance of parish church clock, did 1788 until 1827. son william williams (1793–1862) assisted him , took on business on father s death in 1835. made longcase clocks , maintained parish church clock 1828 until 1839.
