baseball

etsu s baseball team won 2013 atlantic sun tournament 7-2 win on kennesaw state may 26, 2013. first-ever a-sun championship etsu win earned bucs first ncaa tournament appearance in 32 years.


basketball

etsu has long history in men s basketball record of 1,252-1,005 time , 10 overall appearances in ncaa men s division basketball championship, last appearance coming in 2017. appeared in sweet sixteen in 1968 ncaa men s division basketball tournament, , have overall tournament record of 2-10.


the men s head coach steve forbes. became 16th head coach in etsu s 95-year history on march 30, 2015. served 2 seasons assistant coach @ wichita state helped take shockers sweet 16 past season. according etsu director of intercollegiate athletics dr. richard sander, forbes’ recruiting ties , extensive background assistant coach @ ncaa division level – included five-year stop @ university of tennessee – made him perfect fit etsu.


etsu has had success women s basketball program going ncaa women s division basketball championships in 2008, 2009, , 2010. besides appearing in ncaa women s division basketball championship 3 times, have appeared women s national invitation tournament 3 times recent appearance coming in 2015. overall women s program has 543-597 record.


the women s head coach brittney ezell. became eighth head coach in 46-year history of east tennessee state university women’s basketball on may 8, 2013. 2013-14 campaign—in team went 9-21 overall—was ezell s first leading bucs after spending 3 seasons head coach @ belmont university in nashville. in 2014-15, etsu experienced unbelievable turnaround under ezell 16-game win progression 2013-14 bucs went 9-21. total win improvement second best in country. 2014-15 win total of 21 marked first time since 2009-10 season etsu reached 20 wins. led ezell, bucs made southern conference tournament championship game falling no.1 seed chattanooga in overtime, 61-56. etsu appeared in women s national invitational tournament (wnit) third time in school history falling short nc state, 73-59.


football

east tennessee state established first football team in 1920 when university still called east tennessee state normal school. etsu fielded team every year until 2004 season when decision made disband program based on recommendations of 1999 athletic task force , university president paul stanton. in january 2013, student government association approved student fee increase fund , resurrect program. former university of tennessee head coach phillip fulmer has been given task guide direction of new program. on recommendation of coach fulmer, etsu hired former university of north carolina head coach carl torbush team s new head coach. in fall of 2017, buccaneers begin playing on newly erected football stadium.


notable football alumni include donnie abraham, earl ferrell, thane gash, gerald sensabaugh , mike smith. couple of more memorable highlights of etsu football history include 1969 team went undefeated , beat louisiana tech, led terry bradshaw, in grantland rice bowl in baton rouge, la , 1996 team went 10-3 , advanced division i-aa quarterfinals after defeating villanova, 35-29, in first-round playoff game in memorial center.
