in 1950s, voa planned construction of high-power shortwave complex on east coast of united states provide coverage europe, africa, , south america. 1954, project suspended, need continued grow. transmitters in wayne, new jersey, , brentwood , schenectady, new york continued become more inadequate every year. congress gave approval new transmission station in 1958. same year site exploration found 38 potential locations. final selection made year later, , land acquired. site had south enough avoid northern auroral zone, close enough washington d.c. keep transmitting cost minimum. because of number of transmitters needed, decided split transmission site two, site , site b. receiving facilities, program master control, communications center, , station main offices located @ site c. construction began on february 15, 1960 , completed december 7, 1962, @ cost of $23–24 million. 3 stations dedicated president john f. kennedy , became operational on february 8, 1963. new facilities doubled voa s power , employed 100 people around clock. cost offset closure of transmitters in wayne, new jersey, , brentwood , schenectady, new york. january 1988 until mid-1997, station network training facility new foreign service officers, spent 6 months in training @ stations prior being sent overseas. greenville facilities became powerful international broadcaster in world, in both physical size , radio frequency energy. each of sites housed 9 transmitters – 3 of 500,000 watts, 3 of 250,000 watts, , 3 of 50,000 watts.

a man may die, nations may rise , fall, idea lives on. ideas have endurance without death. in dawn of space age, telestar , relay share future these transmitters. telestar , relay cannot broadcast directly home, these shortwave transmitters do.
