the mountain stands 414 m (1,358 ft) above sea level, or 400 metres above surrounding plains. has several summits, surrounding central lake, lac hertel (lake hertel).


most of well-known summits of mountain in western (open public) part. pain de sucre (sugar loaf), 414 m (1,358 ft) high, sunrise, 405 m (1,329 ft) high, rocky, 403 m (1,322 ft) high, , sommet dieppe (dieppe summit), 371 m (1,217 ft) high burnt hill(320 m (1,050 ft) high).


the summits of eastern half of mountain, closed public, little known, point official maps fail identify distinct summits @ all. few names known, such east hill , lake hill. these summits range 277 392 metres (909 1,286 ft) in elevation.

the best-known feature of mountain cliffs. collectively known falaise dieppe, or falaise de dieppe (dieppe cliffs) cliffs part of dieppe summit, , 175 m (574 ft) high. of best known features of cliffs include 60-metre high tour rouge (red tower), 2 slabs, dalle noire (black slab) , dalle verte (green slab), rise @ 75-degree angle.


the cliff s unique ecosystem hosts lichens, cedar trees, of may as 5 hundred years old. hosts mountain s population of peregrine falcons. however, action of rock climbers has proven destructive ecosystem, in addition being dangerous climbers themselves. white cross on cliff commemorates death of boy scout in 1941.


lac hertel

at centre of mountain lac hertel, lake in glacially-formed depression in middle of various summits. covers area of 0.3 square kilometres (0.12 sq mi), , has maximum depth of 9 m (30 ft). fed 3 permanent streams; fourth flows lake toward richelieu river. lake serves secondary reservoir of drinking water region, and, such, swimming, fishing , boating forbidden.


the central position of lake on mountain has led claims mont saint-hilaire volcanic caldera. however, lake result of glacial erosion, , in no way ancient volcanic crater.
