dan fogelman devised concept of series, entitled down earth. described sitcom new jersey family moves gated community occupied exclusively extraterrestrials. american broadcasting company (abc) picked pilot episode of neighbors in october 2011, pilot commitment. in may 2012, show renamed neighbors, , production of program green-lit.


fogelman conceived neighbors after visiting mother, lived in gated townhouse community, , stated, reach out mom s bathroom window , touch neighbor s bathroom window , never spoke or knew each other, , idea these people s living between? , , if aliens? claimed family best part of humanity, , kept exploring stuff . fogelman wants neighbors show whole family can watch . said, s high concept want ground family sitcom .


the show s premise has been described goofy , , has been considered high-concept show entertainment weekly. @ semi-annual press tour in beverly hills, abc entertainment president paul lee stated neighbors has high-concept nature , love[d] it. neighbors stated premiere @ 9:30 p.m. on wednesday, abc decided air in 8:30 time interval. in response this, lee claimed 8:30 p.m. suited show better there s pressure [to perform] after modern family . 9:30 p.m. slot replaced suburgatory. lee wants on air long time, , claimed suburgatory better fit in 9:30 slot. lee praised fogelman, calling him wondering writer ; thinks give smart piece of storytelling .

in january 2012, clara mamet, max charles, , isabella cramp garnered roles in series, mamet teenage daughter , charles , cramp younger siblings. later month, lenny venito obtained lead role marty weaver, father of human family.
