Life Emperor Daozong of Liao



the pagoda of fugong temple, built in 1056 @ site of daozong s grandmother s family home in ying county, shanxi.


emperor daozong succeeded father, emperor xingzong, in 1055. notable reviving name great liao in 1066, designation first given kingdom emperor taizong in 947. other noteworthy achievements made during reign include completion of liao edition of buddhist tripitaka , construction of sakyamuni pagoda in 1056.


emperor daozong faced number of assassination attempt throughout life. in 1063, when group of khitans, angry system of tribal justice had been put under local han chinese administration, ambushed emperor while on hunting trip. emperor daozong survived attack , rebels executed. however, in order reassert legitimacy emperor, forced perform traditional rebirth ceremony. in 1070, restructured liao legal system reflect differences in han chinese , khitan customs.


emperor daozong s reign fraught corruption. spent lavishly on palaces , buddhist worship. many people under rule angered high taxes , began rebel against liao dynasty, notably jurchen tribes overthrow , replace liao dynasty.
