ny 27 s designation assigned in mid-1920s road extending new york city line amagansett. began @ point merrick road exited queens, entering nassau county. followed merrick road , montauk highway east amagansett. east patchogue brookhaven, ny 27 followed south country road, passing through downtown section of village of bellport. ny 27 designation extended eastward along montauk highway montauk point 1930.
on february 24, 1930, south country road added suffolk county highway system cr 36. ny 27 subsequently realigned follow montauk highway between east patchogue , brookhaven.
ny 27 realigned west of oakdale c. 1931 follow sunrise boulevard, new, parallel highway merrick road, , montauk highway, between new york city line , massapequa connecting several local roads massapequa montauk highway @ oakdale. former routing of ny 27 massapequa oakdale became ny 27a, connecting ny 27 in massapequa way of county line road.
sunrise boulevard extended eastward oakdale c. 1934 realignment of ny 27. 1 portion of ny 27 s former route between ny 27a in massapequa , suffolk county line known old sunrise highway, , remains state-maintained day ny 900d, unsigned reference route.

in december 1934, route extended westward new york city. ny 27 followed sunrise highway, linden boulevard, , flatbush avenue through queens , brooklyn manhattan bridge, continued manhattan along canal street terminus @ 6th avenue (then-u.s. route 1a , later ny 1a).
the route realigned in 1940s follow atlantic , washington avenues, eastern parkway, buffalo avenue, , rockaway avenue between flatbush avenue , linden boulevard. ny 27 again altered in mid-1960s continue west on linden boulevard, caton avenue, , church avenue south end of prospect expressway. there, route turned north, following freeway end @ gowanus expressway (then-ny 27a), ny 27a ends. prospect expressway planned robert moses, , constructed during 1950s.
prior 1970, ny 27a continued north holland tunnel in manhattan way of gowanus expressway, brooklyn–battery tunnel, , west side elevated highway. on january 1, 1970, ny 27a truncated eastward current western terminus in massapequa while ny 27 extended northward along ny 27a s former route holland tunnel, ends @ i-78 , ny 9a.
by 1973, ny 27 cut interchange gowanus expressway while i-478 assigned both battery tunnel , of west side elevated highway south of lincoln tunnel.
long island
robert moses developed plans elevated expressway featuring 10 12 lanes along sunrise highway through nassau county. expressway have provided truck link south shore of long island downtown villages along route put stop idea.
sunrise highway becomes limited-access highway @ ny 109.
the portion of sunrise highway between north lindenhurst , town of southampton gradually upgraded limited-access highway. @ east end of ny 27 highway abruptly became three-lane highway east of shinnecock canal, @ point ny 27 concurrent cr 39. area known shinnecock squeeze traffic on two-lane eastbound ny 27 squeezed single lane.
in 2006 , 2007 suffolk county , southampton officials began using traffic cones adjust lanes accommodate peak travel in called traffic cone program .
at end of summer 2007, eastbound lane added, heading eastward north sea road. construction snarled traffic on cr 39. long island rail road added 3 trains each way between speonk , east hampton during construction. new eastbound lane opened in april 2008. four-lane highway between eastern end of sunrise highway , north sea road, ny 27 has been widened accommodate future summer backups , avoiding shinnecock squeeze.
eastward extension
the first proposals extension east of shinnecock canal made in 1950s. in 1969, new york legislature approved $160 million plan extension. limited access route, flanked bicycle , equestrian trails. eastbound , westbound roadways separated wide wooded medians. part, road run mile or 2 north of existing ny 27, avoiding populated centers through passes. extended sunrise highway have had interchanges cr 38 (north sea road) , cr 39 (county road), cr 79 (bridgehampton–sag harbor road), ny 114 (east hampton–sag harbor turnpike), cr 40 (three mile harbor road), , cr 45 (amagansett–springs road) before merging existing montauk highway. exits have been sequentially numbered 67 72. plan failed, , governor hugh carey canceled in 1975. other suggestions have included building limited-access road on either side of long island rail road s montauk branch.
older interchanges
as sunrise highway upgraded during 1970s , 1980s many interchanges redesigned , replaced. original interchange robert moses causeway in west islip had 2 parkway-style arch bridges on 2 lanes of ny 27. when service roads built in western islip township between 1969 , 1972, parkway-style bridges added them well. interchanges @ fifth ave , brentwood road in bay shore had parkway-style arch bridges , cloverleafs. when service roads added, parkway-style bridges removed , replaced modern structures exist today , original cloverleafs modified align new service roads.
as interchanges west, islip avenue (ny 111) , carleton avenue (cr 17) in islip terrace had parkway-style bridges crossing on sunrise highway. however, islip ave had partial clover leaf on west side of bridge. eastern side of bridge used side streets access, did both sides of carleton ave bridge. section of sunrise highway wasn t divided. since 1983, both areas have more modern bridges on service roads, , old cross streets connect service roads or other side roads instead. islip avenue connects ny 27 @ exit 45 while carleton avenue meets sunrise highway @ exit 46.
proposed interchanges , crossings
besides replacement of interchanges in western suffolk county, sunrise highway has had proposed interchanges , crossings either never built, or built according alternate design specifications.
in north lindenhurst area, plans construct cloverleaf interchange cr 2 (straight path) in copiague have existed time. in recent years, planners have realized such interchange close cloverleafs cr 47 (great neck road) west , cr 3 (wellwood road) east. further complicate matters, widened cr 28 extended sunrise highway near straight path intersection in late-1980s. date, no interchange has been built area.
the oakdale merge convergence of sunrise highway , montauk highway between great river , oakdale abutting southern edge of connetquot river state park. montauk highway predates sunrise highway in area. when sunrise highway extended east of amityville in 1940, terminated @ montauk highway s entrance connetquot river state park.
in 1953, sunrise highway extended east patchogue; 0.5 mi (0.80 km) overlap of ny 27 , ny 27a created, at-grade intersections connecting highways. segment of alignment remains south of eastern interchange.
ny 27a truncated east of overlap in 1972. plans upgrade interchange have existed since creation.
during early-1960s, suffolk county department of public works considered designating county highway connect nicolls road in lake grove through long island macarthur airport, on east end of merge. 1981, new york state department of transportation planned add service roads , proper interchange @ both ends of merge. pressure environmental groups seeking avoid damaging parkland stalled construction. nysdot reconstructed sunrise highway in eastern islip township freeway during 1990s, resulting in present configuration.
the entrance connetquot river park remained at-grade intersection, accessible westbound lane. former segments of montauk highway exist on both sides of interchange, , sections of both roads converted fishing areas owned new york state department of environmental conservation. numerous accidents occurred @ east end of merge, resulting in reconstruction in 1999. new off-ramp service road pond road built, resulting in renumbering of exit 47 exit 46a.
while none of interchanges north of patchogue built until 1988 1993, new york state department of transportation (nysdot) had known need them, , had planned them decades before eventual construction. example, waverly avenue (cr 19) proposed cloverleaf interchange. today, exit 52 cr 19 diamond interchange instead. north ocean avenue (cr 83) proposed accessible via connecting ramps side streets including austin street along eastbound lane , sinn street along westbound lane. today, exit 53a half-diamond interchange while austin street , howard street dead end streets, , sinn street never reached north ocean avenue.
maple avenue had crossed median on ny 27 between north ocean avenue , ny 112 until 1975. road have been used connecting ramp both roads. today, north section intersects westbound service road, while south section converted dead end street north of austin street. ny 112 proposed accessible via connecting ramps side streets such franklin street along eastbound lane , extension of sinn street along westbound lane.
sinn street acquired nysdot east of ny 112 in early-1960s, , gradually abandoned. today, exit 53 diamond interchange, , sinn street, austin street, , franklin street dead-end streets. there proposals connect washington avenue , phyllis drive via ramps side streets such franklin street along eastbound lane, , extension of sinn street along westbound lane.
phyllis drive once part of ny 27 until sunrise highway extended eastport in 1957. today, both roads accessible via service roads. residents waiting potential pedestrian bridge connecting 2 ends of washington avenue.
west of carmans river near southaven county park in south haven, there plan combine eastbound service road montauk highway, similar oakdale merge.
