on january 19, 2015 wilmore began hosting nightly show larry wilmore, late-night panel talk show aired on comedy central. spin-off of daily show, , served replacement colbert report. produced jon stewart s production company busboy productions. show criticized controversial segment featuring bill nye in september 2015, adweek characterizing moment wilmore had turned away colbert s legacy of intellectualism. nye segment may have negatively affected viewership, ratings down more half year before. on august 15, 2016, comedy central announced wilmore s show had been cancelled. show ended on august 18, 2016, total of 259 episodes.


in june 2017, wilmore came under fire comments had made during time on nightly show. when reporting on case of otto warmbier, american student arrested in north korea , sentenced 15 years of hard labor allegedly attempting steal propaganda sign, wilmore repeatedly ridiculed warmbier. wilmore referred warmbier otto von crybaby , suggested warmbier thought had frat bro privilege . otto warmbier died after being medically evacuated north korea in comatose state, after 15 months in prison.
