route description


the selmon expressway entering downtown tampa (looking west), elevated, reversible lanes in bottom-right, curving out of image, re-entering image in right-center , traveling beneath mainline meridian avenue.


the tollway begins @ interchange u.s. route 92 (gandy boulevard) , dale mabry highway north of macdill air force base. makes way northeast along lightly used csx rail corridor first 4 miles before heading east towards downtown tampa. florida ave, highway winds through channelside district , southern fringe of ybor city before continuing due eastward towards 78th st. there connection i-4 east of 22nd st allows commuters move between various points throughout hillsborough county , beyond. west of 78th st, expressway crosses on palm river (the southernmost portion of tampa bypass canal) , makes southeastward curve towards 301. there, highway crosses on 301 , falkenburg road before ending @ trumpet interchange i-75 in brandon.


express lanes

the reversible express lanes (rel), known state road 618a, begin @ meridian avenue in downtown tampa, following main expressway s path above in center median of journey. entire route elevated, exception of at-grade segments between 26th street , 39th street, between 78th street , i-75. at-grade provision made between 26th street , 39th street accommodate newly opened interstate 4/selmon expressway connector. at-grade portion equipped eastbound (only) slip-ramp allow commuters south tampa utilize rel. toll gantry located east of 78th street , toll gantry along entire rel. between 78th street , 301, slip-ramps exist both directions (exiting , entering rel). rel crosses on i-75 , ends @ town center boulevard in brandon (near westfield brandon). there, highway disperses onto brandon parkway, connects providence road , other redesigned thoroughfares allow seamless connection points within brandon , surrounding areas.

westbound (to downtown): 6 am – 10 am.
transitional^: 10 am – 1 pm.

eastbound direction (brandon parkway segment) opens @ 10:30 am.
westbound direction (west of 78th street) closes @ 11:30 am.


eastbound (to brandon): 1 pm – 4 am.


weekends , holidays

eastbound direction (to brandon) only^^: 1pm (friday afternoon) 4 am (monday morning)
on major holidays, rel operate eastbound day, direction reversing westbound following day @ 4am, if holiday not fall on friday. if holiday falls on friday, rel remain eastbound throughout entire weekend until following monday @ 4am. such holidays announced on thea website prior holiday.

open-road tolling

the expressway has no manned toll gates. accommodate motorists not have sunpass transponders (such out of state), tampa-hillsborough expressway authority , florida s turnpike enterprise have created bill program (also known toll-by-plate ).


each vehicle without sunpass transponder photographed , license plate read. if license plate number associated bill account, account used pay toll. if there no account, notification of toll mailed vehicle s owner; after 30 days, penalties imposed. toll-by-plate administrative fees applied bills not associated registered toll-by-plate account.
