thessaloniki fell forces of nazi germany on april 22, 1941 , remained under german occupation until 30 october 1944. city suffered considerable damage allied bombing , of entire jewish population remained following 1917 fire, exterminated nazis. barely thousand jews survived. thessaloniki rebuilt , recovered after war, resurgence taking in both rapid growth in population , large-scale development of new infrastructure , industry throughout 1950s, 1960s , 1970s. of urban development of period without all-embracing plan, contributing traffic , zoning problems remaining day.
