at 5pm on friday 9 february, truck bomb parked in docklands. docklands high-prestige target ira. made of many high-rise buildings housing offices of major banks, corporations, newspapers , television stations. included canary wharf tower, tallest building in europe. truck parked 80 yards (70 m) south quay station on docklands light railway, under point tracks cross marsh wall. @ 5:30pm, ira spokesman issued statement irish broadcaster rtÉ, announcing ira, great reluctance , ending ceasefire @ 6pm. however, rtÉ skeptical , did not report announcement on 6pm news; minutes before bomb detonated. shortly after 5:30pm, ira began sending string of @ least 6 telephoned warnings bomb. accompanied secret ira codeword, known ira , security forces, police know warning genuine. in 1 of calls, offices of irish news, caller said there s massive bomb beside south quay station, marsh wall, isle of dogs, london. evacuate .


police officers arrived @ scene and, @ 6pm, began evacuating area around south quay station. officers (of whom there @ least twenty) told cordon off area, clear of vehicles , pedestrians, , keep staff inside office blocks. however, there confusion on bomb was. buildings near bomb evacuated, staff ordered inside police. people believed warning hoax. @ 6:48pm officers found blue truck @ south quay plaza, parked between 2 office blocks. officer ran nearby newsagents shop , told 2 workers inside leave immediately. however, men stayed close shop first.


the bomb detonated @ 7:01pm, devastating surrounding office blocks , showering area broken glass. blast heard , felt across london, , shook canary wharf tower. part of south quay plaza destroyed , explosion left crater 32 ft (10 m) wide , 10 ft (3 m) deep. john grieve, head of metropolitan police s anti-terrorist unit, described scene of utter devastation [...] scene apocalypse . 2 men in newsagents—shop owner inam bashir (29), , employee john jeffries (31)—were killed outright. blown through 2 walls , bodies buried rubble. more 100 people hurt, broken glass, 39 of whom needed hospital treatment. of injured staff in nearby office blocks. members of british moroccan family sitting in car near newsagents; car wrecked blast , father received severe head injuries. spent 2 weeks in coma , suffered permanent brain damage, left him disabled. woman blinded in 1 eye shards of glass , needed 300 stitches on face , arms. second explosion caused gas leak hampered rescue efforts.


the blast caused estimated £150 million worth of damage , cost insurers £170 million. 3 nearby buildings (the midland bank building, south quay plaza , ii) destroyed; former had demolished , latter 2 had rebuilt. station extensively damaged, both , bridge near bomb reopened within weeks (through services resumed on 15 april , station reopened on 22 april), latter needing cosmetic repairs despite proximity blast.
