the regiment raised @ norwich colonel james cholmondeley james cholmondeley s regiment of foot in 1741 during war of austrian succession. sent scotland in 1745 , fought against jacobites battle of falkirk muir in january 1746 , battle of culloden in april 1746 during jacobite rising. regiment deployed flanders in spring 1747 service in war of austrian succession , saw action @ battle of lauffeld in july 1747. ranked 59th regiment of foot in 1747 re-ranked 48th regiment of foot in 1751.
the regiment embarked north america in january 1755 service in french , indian war and, having landed in virginia in february 1755, saw action @ disastrous battle of monongahela, siege of louisburg in june 1758 , battle of plains of abraham in september 1759. sailed west indies in 1761 , took part in invasion of martinique in january 1762 , battle of havana in march 1762. regiment returned home in 1763 service in ireland.
in 1773 regiment returned west indies. after losing many troops fever remnants of regiment captured french in dominica in 1778 during american revolutionary war; interned until 1780 when released , allowed travel home. regiment given county designation in 1782 becoming 48th (the northamptonshire) regiment of foot.
