Bikini Atoll residents arrive Kili Island
kili uninhabited until november 2, 1948 when united states government relocated bikini atoll s indigenous population rongerik atoll, had been relocated after first relocation kwajalein atoll failed. islanders had consented believed temporary use of island nuclear tests. thought able return island home within few years.
on kwajalein atoll, islanders living in tents on strip of grass alongside airport runway. in june 1948 bikini residents chose kili island long-term home. small island uninhabited , wasn t ruled paramount king, or iroij. in june bikini community chose 2 dozen men accompany 8 seabees kili begin constructing village. in november 1948, residents, totaling 184 individuals, moved kili island, learned new location incompatible traditional diet , lifestyle based on lagoon fishing.
in 1957, bikini residents, without legal representation, signed agreement united states gave u.s. complete control of bikini atoll. bikini families gave right future claims against united states. in exchange, received $25,000 in cash , additional $300,000 trust fund yielded semi-annual interest payment of approximately $5,000, or $15 per person per year. given kili island , several islands in jaluit atoll.
