france has 2 national police forces:



the police nationale, formerly called sûreté , considered civilian police force. origins date 1812 , created eugène françois vidocq. in 1966 name officially changed police nationale . has primary responsibility major cities , large urban areas. police nationale under control of ministry of interior; strength 150 000.
the gendarmerie nationale part of french armed forces. has primary responsibility policing smaller towns , rural areas, armed forces , military installations, airport security , shipping ports. being military force, gendarmerie has highly centralized organization structure. under control of both ministry of defence , ministry of interior (as far civil duties concerned). gendarmerie s origin dates 1306 when king philippe le bel (philip fair) formed first mounted military police force called maréchaussée . between 1697 , 1699, king louis xiv asserted authority on police in france , maréchaussée became formal law enforcement arm of country. in february 1791 renamed gendarmerie nationale revolutionary government of france. today there 105 000 gendarmes in france.
