roynton cottage, single-storey wooden bungalow high on hillside below rivington pike, , extensive gardens private property of william lever used weekend visits , entertaining. waymark 2009, p. 80 bungalow destroyed in arson attack suffragette, edith rigby, on 8 july 1913. replacement built of stone. thomas mawson designed 45-acre (180,000 m) gardens between 1905 , 1922. private gardens contained terraces , pool, japanese lake , pagoda, italian-style gardens, seven-arched bridge , pigeon tower lady leverhulme s sewing room on top floor. after lever s death roynton cottage acquired bolton brewer, john magee. during second world war bungalow requisitioned use billet troops, , nissen huts erected in grounds. after war site acquired liverpool corporation, decided demolish building.


in 1974 park , gardens passed north west water authority liverpool corporation, , united utilities on privatisation, , maintained public country park people of bolton, protected rights afforded liverpool corporation act 1902 ensuring free , uninterrupted enjoyment public . listed historic landscape of lever park forms part of rivington county park , used recreation. in 2016 rivington heritage trust , groundwork cheshire lancashire , merseyside awarded £3.4 million heritage lottery fund conserve, repair , protect japanese gardens , remaining grade ii listed structures.
