chisholm had assistant manager roles @ partick thistle, clydebank, ross county, airdrie, falkirk , dundee united, working ian mccall.


dundee united

chisholm appointed caretaker manager of dundee united on 14 march 2005, following sacking of ian mccall. chisholm suffered 3–2 defeats against both celtic , hibernian in first 2 matches in charge. following week, however, chisholm s team triumphed on hibernian, rangers , hearts. united went on end run of 8 games on 3 years without win against neighbours dundee, goals mark wilson , jim mcintyre sealing 2–1 win. these results meant chisholm won spl manager of month award in first full month in charge of team (april 2005). chisholm s team retained spl status in dramatic style late barry robson penalty @ inverness on final day of season.


united s victory against hibs meant reached 2005 scottish cup final, lost 1–0 against celtic. celtic had qualified uefa champions league, however, united qualified uefa cup. chisholm given position of manager on permanent basis on 24 may 2005. despite spending considerable money on players such lee miller, dundee united eliminated in qualifying stage of uefa cup finnish team mypa. poor league form , 3–2 defeat against aberdeen in third round of scottish cup, after having led 2–0, led chisholm being sacked on 10 january 2006 dundee united chairman eddie thompson.

chisholm again became ian mccall s assistant, time @ dumfries club queen of south, until mccall s departure club @ end of 2006–07 season. chisholm accepted role manager, appointing kenny brannigan assistant manager. chairman davie rae announced club become professional season. in march 2008, chisholm guided queens second ever scottish cup semi-final appearance 2–0 quarter final victory against dundee, game notable goal 84 yards ryan mccann. queens followed 4–3 win against aberdeen in semi-final, meant chisholm had guided queens first ever scottish cup final appearance. despite second half queens goals steve tosh , jim thomson, rangers ran out 3–2 winners in final. queens finished fourth in scottish first division.


as rangers had qualified 2008–09 uefa champions league through league position, queens entered 2008–09 uefa cup competition. drawn in qualification round against danish club fc nordsjælland. first leg, hosted @ excelsior stadium in airdrie, played in quagmire danes running out 2–1 winners. queens delivered stronger performance in return leg, controlling of game 1 goal show superiority. 1–0 victory of no value in aggregate result due away goals rule , queens pushing out second goal, danes took advantage score 2 goals in last 5 minutes. chisholm s team selection uefa cup ties caused surprise. stephen dobbie prolific striker @ club in generation, chisholm started dobbie on bench both ties instead preferring workmanlike stewart kean.


a strong start 2008–09 league campaign saw club sitting top of table in october. @ same time, chisholm linked vacant position @ dundee, davie rae refused chisholm permission talk dark blues. coincided queens losing form, gained 3 draws next 12 games placing them 1 place above bottom. form improved in latter part of season , club finished in mid-table.


the 2009–10 season progressed in similar fashion season before. queens top of table, poorer results followed dragged club mid table position. club suffered 4-0 defeat in scottish cup against airdrie. chisholm applied vacant managerial position @ kilmarnock, job taken jimmy calderwood. 2 months later, chisholm offered vacant position @ dundee. chisholm made following comments after leaving qos:

chisholm took dundee job while top of first division, although club had sacked jocky scott after going 4 games without win. chisholm said ahead of first game in charge, ironically against previous club, opportunity couldn t pass @ time of life, strange experience being on opposite sides tomorrow night. chisholm first person manage both major dundee clubs. billy dodds, queen of south strikers coach under chisholm, joined him @ dens park assistant.


dundee failed win promotion @ end of 2009–10 season , entered administration few months later. administrator made chisholm , dodds redundant following day.


east fife

after leaving dundee in october 2010 , spending on year out of professional football, chisholm set estate agent business wife. in march 2012, chisholm appointed assistant manager of east fife gordon durie on part-time basis. after durie took ill during game, chisholm took control of team. resigned position @ east fife in october 2012 due pressures of combining both tasks , commuting lenzie methil. chisholm appointed international development coach sunderland.
