dornfelder created in 1956 @ weinsberg research center in baden-württemberg german grape breeder august herold. variety created cross of 2 vitis vinifera crossing created herold, helfensteiner (a cross of frühburgunder/pinot précoce noir , trollinger/schiava grossa created in 1931) , heroldrebe (a cross of blauer portugieser , blaufränkisch/lemberger created in 1929). variety named after 1 of 19th century founders of school of viticulture @ weinsberg, immanuel august ludwig dornfeld.
originally created blending variety add color pale red wines of germany, plantings of dornfelder slow take off. 1970 there around 100 hectares (250 acres) of variety planted. grape officially approved german wine production in 1980 plantings rapidly increasing throughout rest of 20th century. 2000 2005-2006, plantings again doubled wine produced dornfelder earn commercial success.
as successful vinifera crossing, dornfelder used parent variety create several new varieties including acolon (a 1971 crossing blaufränkisch), cabernet dorio (a 1971 crossing cabernet sauvignon), cabernet dorsa (another 1971 crossing cabernet sauvignon) , monarch (a 1988 crossing solaris).
