the oldest parts of building parts furthermost away water. first building, dating 13th century, rectangular brick building. continuously expanded during middle ages until attained present, square shape during 15th century. large reconstruction works carried out during ownership of duke charles, circa 1580-90. building made higher, renaissance gables added , interior remade. gables removed later, during ownership of anna woynarowska, , further changes made during 19th century, example addition of roof lantern. during of 19th century castle furthermore suffered neglect.


from outset, building had double function fortification , palace. materials used, such brick, expensive of day , reflect castle used representational , recreational purposes bishops of strängnäs.


the castle surrounded former deer park, since 2003 enjoys protection nature reserve , forms part of eu-wide ecological network natura 2000.
