academic appointments , other significant work experiences

beginning career in 1955, harris worked caseworker in hampton, virginia in department of public welfare until 1957, , caseworker , supervisor in department of welfare , institutions in richmond, virginia, until 1963. in 1963, harris went on become executive director of friends’ association children, richmond, virginia, position held 3 years. in year following, director of richmond community action program.


from 1967 1976, harris served assistant professor in school of social work @ virginia commonwealth university, university rejected admission in 1954. during last year assistant professor, harris director of student affairs in school of social work. in 1976, harris became associate professor in school of social work. 2 years later, while associate professor, grace named associate dean of school of social work @ virginia commonwealth university, role maintained 2 years, until 1980. in year following, named fellow in academic administration american council on education, internship president , vice president academic affairs @ virginia commonwealth university. in 1981, harris became professor , associate dean in school of social work, position held year, until 1982. 8 years following, dean , professor in school of social work @ virginia commonwealth university. in 1990, named vice provost continuing studies & public service. in 1993, moved on become provost , vice president academic affairs. during summer of 1995, named acting president of virginia commonwealth university, , once again in 1998.


following retirement position provost , vice president academic affairs in 1999, dr. grace e. harris named director of grace e. harris leadership institute, distinguished professor. dedicating more time towards retirement, today visionary leader institute bearing name.


personal life

grace met husband, james w. “dick” harris in college @ hampton institute, , married in summer after graduation, in july 1954. has 2 children, gayle , james w. “jay” harris, jr., , 1 grandchild, jullian, gayle’s son. following in footsteps, daughter social worker, , son, jay, employed @ virginia commonwealth university. additionally, grandchild, jullian, received master’s degree virginia commonwealth university. dr. harris member of delta sigma theta.

in december 2007, former virginia commonwealth university school of business building @ 1015 floyd ave. named grace e. harris hall in honor.
