in historical times centre governments controlled mountain tribes of western hunan. county, named linyuan, established there in 2nd century bc.


in han dynasty area called wuling county . in sui dynasty, called langzhou. during song dynasty, called dingcheng. in tang dynasty (618–907) became seat of lang prefecture. in 1117, changde county established, , around 1165, changde superior prefecture established. name changde has been used city ever since.


this status retained until 1912, when superior prefecture abolished , city became county seat.
