history
origins (1977–81)
the blades began in summer of 1977 when 5 friends got play gig in catholic young mens society hall in ringsend.
the lineup whittled down three: paul cleary (born 9 september 1959) on bass , vocals, brother lar (born 2 june 1957) on guitar , friend pat larkin (born 25 november 1956) on drums.
even stage, band s unashamed working-class origins , integrity marked them out more elliptical art rock being pioneered u2 , atrix.
the band regularly played in dublin s infamous venues magnet on pearse street, mcgonagle s on south anne street , baggot inn on lower baggot street, did six-week residency u2. many in crowd left after blades set , blades rather u2 tipped stardom.
their first single hot released on energy records in 1980, followed ghost of chance in 1981 played on late late show. legendary producer john porter produced first album last man in europe due personnel changes @ record company never got released in england.
reshuffle , continued success (1981–86)
pat left band in march 1981, replaced jake reilly on drums, new lineup of paul, larry , jake played first gig in magnet on pearse street on 18 july 1981, later summer paul switched guitar bringing in bassist brian foley (ex. vipers) , added brass section including frank duff( ex.<the mod-ls>. larry left in 1982.
the band signed irish label reekus, , double a-sided single, bride wore white / animation released in march 1982. in hotpress national poll, bride wore white voted best single while blades voted promising act in ireland , paul cleary beat van morrison , bono best irish songwriter
in 1985, reekus released album last man in europe .
one of last gestures shun self aid, backslapping concert highlight chronic unemployment problem in ireland @ time , instead played socialist rock system concert in liberty hall in 1986.
in 2001, reekus records released double cd boxset days , includes both albums: last man in europe , raytown revisited .
post break-up
paul cleary continued band partisans , later led eight-piece pub rock band called cajun kings. released solo material. in 2001, paul released first new material in 15 years, 11-track album crooked town.
pat larkin later peridots, , brian foley (the mountain climbers, harvest ministers).
reunion , smalltime ep (2013-present)
the blades reformed in 2013 play 2 sold out reunion gigs in dublin s olympia theatre on friday 13 , saturday 14 december. leading reunion gigs performed on late late show in november 2013.
in addition reunion gigs in 2013, blades performed @ electric picnic in 2014 , @ olympia theatre on 5 december 2014. in november 2014 paul cleary released brand new solo single still believe.
following reunion onstage, band began working on new material in studio on strength of new songwriting cleary. in november 2015, released first new music blades since 1985 4-track ep entitled smalltime. first single, harder times released on ian dempsey breakfast show on today fm on 14 october 2015 , ep has received widespread critical acclaim irish media.
