collection

douglas cook brought total number of 5,000 different species , cultivars of trees, shrubs , climbers eastwoodhill. lot of them imported well-known english nurseries hillier s, veitch s , slococks. bought many nurseries in new zealand duncan , davies in new plymouth , harrison s in palmerston north.


the main focus of collection still trees, shrubs , climbers northern hemisphere, nowadays eastwoodhill has large collection of native trees, too.


first catalogues

in beginning of 1970s, first catalogue of trees, shrubs , climbers prepared bob berry. contained 3,000 different taxa. after first version of 1972, catalogue remained responsibility of bob berry until 1986. nowadays catalogue computerised, , responsibility of curator.

acer, 90 taxa
quercus, 80 taxa. in 1990s, large numbers of acorns collected; 3 nurseries supplied ten thousands acorns of red oak (quercus rubra) , scarlet oak (quercus coccinea) year. also, pin oaks (quercus palustris), english oaks (quercus robur) , mongolian oaks (quercus mongolica) eastwoodhill sold via commercial nurseries.

close entrance of arboretum homestead garden found. dates 1910, covers 1 hectare (0.010 km), , maintained volunteers since 1984. ongoing project, garden provides fitting introduction arboretum , full of interesting plantings aesthetically combined in unique setting .
