hutter wakes deserted castle morning after , notices fresh punctures on neck which, in letter sends courier on horseback delivered devoted wife, attributes mosquitoes. night, orlok signs documents purchase house across hutter s own home in wisborg , notices photo of hutter s wife remarking has lovely throat. reading book vampires took local inn, hutter starts suspect orlok nosferatu, bird of death. cowers in room midnight approaches, there no way bar door. door opens , orlok enters, true nature revealed, , hutter hides under bed covers , falls unconscious. @ same time happening, wife awakens sleep , in trance walks towards balcony , onto railing. alarmed, harding shouts ellen s name , faints while asks doctor. after doctor arrives, shouts hutter s name remaining in trance , apparently able see orlok in castle threatening unconscious husband. doctor believes trance-like state due blood congestion . next day, hutter explores castle. in crypt, finds coffin in orlok resting dormant. hutter becomes horrified , dashes room. hours later window, sees orlok piling coffins on coach , climbing last 1 before coach departs. hutter escapes castle through window, knocked unconscious fall , awakens in hospital.


when sufficiently recovered, hurries home. meanwhile, coffins shipped down river on raft. transferred schooner, not before 1 opened crew, revealing multitude of rats. sailors on ship sick 1 one; captain , first mate dead. suspecting truth, first mate goes below destroy coffins. however, orlok awakens , horrified sailor jumps sea. unaware of danger, captain becomes orlok s latest victim when ties himself wheel. when ship arrives in wisborg, orlok leaves unobserved, carrying 1 of coffins, , moves house purchased. next morning, when ship inspected, captain found dead. after examining logbook, doctors assume dealing plague. town stricken panic, , people warned stay inside.


there many deaths in town, blamed on plague. knock, had been committed psychiatric ward, escapes after murdering warden. townspeople give chase, eludes them climbing roof, using scarecrow. meanwhile, orlok stares window @ sleeping ellen. against husband s wishes, ellen had read book found. book claims way defeat vampire woman pure in heart distract vampire beauty through night. opens window invite him in, faints. when hutter revives her, sends him fetch professor bulwer. after leaves, orlok comes in. becomes engrossed drinking blood forgets coming day. when rooster crows, orlok vanishes in puff of smoke tries flee. ellen lives long enough embraced grief-stricken husband. last scene shows count orlok s ruined castle in carpathian mountains, symbolizing end of reign of terror.
