in 1926, whittaker chambers first saw shemitz @ passaic textile strike, described @ length in 1952 memoir.


in 1930, chambers , friend mike intrator began court shemitz , lumpkin; both couples married in 1931. shemitz s marriage witnessed grace hutchins , life partner anna rochester. shemitz , chambers had daughter in 1933 , son in 1936.


once chambers defected, husband , wife lived @ pipe creek farm, near westminster, carroll county, maryland, rest of lives.


shemitz made first , trip abroad, europe, chambers in summer of 1959, during met arthur koestler , margarete buber-neumann among others.


when chambers died of seventh heart attack on july 9, 1961, shemitz collapsed , rushed nearest hospital in gettysburg, pennsylvania. on august 16, 1986, died age 86 @ home.
