in interbellum period (1918–39) poryck belonged poland. town in wołyń voivodeship inhabited 2000 people, half of whom jewish , remaining part polish , ukrainian. residents had lived peacefully part.


on 11 july 1943, units of ukrainian insurgent army , oun nationalists murdered polish inhabitants of town. people killed during ceremony in local roman catholic church. ukrainian sotnia of 20 men surrounded , entered church filled people. threw grenades @ faithful of whom women , children. shot @ them machine guns , set fire church survivors in hiding. altogether 300 persons murdered. later on, ukrainian nationalists burned remained of czacki palace. town captured red army on 18 july 1944.


on 60th anniversary of massacre, presidents aleksander kwaśniewski of poland , leonid kuchma of ukraine unveiled monument commemorating event. both presidents called forgiveness , reconciliation, kuchma saying in place polish victims rest, on behalf of ukrainians want peace , justice, wish express deep sympathy wronged poles, suffered result of disaster. issue strong condemnation of violence committed against polish civilian population. — pavlivka
