on 20 june 1978, city hit powerful earthquake, registering moment magnitude of 6.5. tremor caused considerable damage several buildings , of city s byzantine monuments; forty people crushed death when entire apartment block collapsed in central hippodromio district. nonetheless, large city recovered considerable speed effects of disaster. christian , byzantine monuments of thessaloniki inscribed on unesco world heritage list in 1988 , thessaloniki later became european city of culture in 1997.

thessaloniki today has become 1 of important trade , business hubs in balkans port, port of thessaloniki being 1 of largest in aegean, , facilitating trade throughout balkan hinterland. city forms 1 of largest student centres in southeastern europe , host largest student population in greece. city sustains 2 state universities — aristotle university of thessaloniki, largest university in greece (founded in 1926), , university of macedonia, alongside technological education institute of thessaloniki. sponsors range of private international institutions, either affiliated universities in other nations, or accredited abroad.


in june 2003, city host summit meeting of european leaders, @ end of greek presidency of eu, summit taking place @ porto carras resort in chalkidiki, aid security precautions. in 2004 city hosted number of football events forming part of 2004 summer olympic games , experienced massive modernisation program. thessaloniki unsuccessfully bid 2008 world expo, time won zaragoza in spain, planned bid 2017 announced in september 2006 , in full development.
