guity novin s parents, molook kashefi , abdol-rahman navran (circa 1943)


guity novin born in educated middle-class family in kermanshah. family northern iranian city of bandar anzali. father abdol-rahman navran son of abodl-rahim, ship owner , sea merchant in northern iranian port of anzali (bandar-e anzali) in caspian sea. traded between ports of baku, lankaran , astara in azerbaijan. in 20th century caucasian region became major geostrategic center , 1 of important theaters of world war i. after october bolshevist coup , civil war in former czarist russia, red army conquered baku in 1918, navy of white army took refuge in anzali port, under control of british forces. red navy conquered port of anzali in 1921 , confiscated abdol-rahim s ships. these events financially ruined abdol-rahim lost capital , watched business collapse. seeing no prospects of recovery, young desperate businessman committed suicide. young son abdol-rahman raised navran grandparents, , separated young mother, remarried , gave birth son djavad bani-yaghub. after finishing high school, sought independence abdol-rahman found job in order independent. offered post @ iran customs, , sent work @ branch office in ghasr-e shirin, border post iraq. abdol-rahman learned play accordion, spent weekends @ kermanshah, fell in love sister of 1 of colleagues, local beauty name molook kashefi. after met, proposed , accepted. had 4 children, guity, eldest, kamran, brother, , 2 younger sisters jaleh, , jila. meanwhile, abdol-rahman brought mother , younger brother live him. mother never left him again.


the formative years 1953–1970

in spring of 1953, navran family moved tehran. tumultuous years iran, nationalist prime minister, dr.mossadegh, had nationalized oil industry in 1951, , confrontation between iran , britain have escalated extent iranian government refused allow british involvement in iran’s oil industry, , britain making sure iran not export oil. mossadegh had stopped negotiations anglo iranian oil company [aioc] , british government had announced de facto blockade of iran , reinforced naval force in persian gulf , lodged complaints against iran before united nations security council. on 4 april 1953, cia director dulles approved plan oust mosaddegh. plot, known operation ajax, succeeded , mosaddegh ousted. during these turmoils, young guity hearing array of disturbing news without being able make sense of them. instance, overheard adults head of police had been kidnapped , tortured death, had frightened enormously.


guity sixteen years old art teacher @ asadi high school in tehran noticed talent , suggested should apply admission girl s college of fine arts in tehran. admitted there , graduated in 1965. important steppingstone being admitted faculty of decorative arts in 1970. academic experience, later on wrote:



after graduation, guity married farid novin, economist, , mothered 3 sons saladin, alamir, , alishah.
