the conservatives considered number of possible candidates including colonel thomas walter harding, liberal unionist had contested west leeds against herbert gladstone , former lord mayor of leeds; f. stanley jackson, son of retiring mp , yorkshire county cricketer; , reginald wigram , sir arthur lawson, both officers of party in leeds. selected lawson, 58-year-old businessman president of leeds conservative association.


liberals

north leeds liberal association, decided wanted strong local candidate, adopted rowland barran candidate in july 1902. other possible candidates mentioned in press g. j. cockburn, chairman of north leeds liberal association , leeds school board, , w. beckworth, there no real contest. barran aged 44, , prominent in firm of local clothing manufacturers , merchants. son of sir john barran former mp leeds , nearby seat of otley. rowland barran member of leeds city council , former member of leeds school board.


labour

the independent labour party in leeds announced standing candidate in by-election. considering philip snowden later became labour mp , chancellor of exchequer , 2 other local men candidates, t. b. duncan, secretary of shop assistants association. party reportedly not particularly strong in division, few members , in need of financial support party headquarters. keir hardie visited leeds other top labour , trade union officials in july 1902 discuss by-election. however, lack of resources forced labour not bring forward candidate. had by-election fight in clitheroe in lancashire better prospect , @ meeting of ilp in leeds on 4 july, hardie told members fight in north leeds have wait future election. ironically labour position in clitheroe seat strong both liberal , conservatives chose not contest , labour candidate david shackleton returned unopposed.
