tristram hunt writing in guardian complimented marr confrontational, argumentative, personalised history stating television history, done well, should more of ice-bath comforting, warm soak. gareth mclean congratulates marr analysing times in immerses himself, effortlessly communicating enthusiasm, , hinting @ fundamental truths of human condition states future of factual programming. impressed marr maintains penetrating scrutiny , level of insight throughout series. lucy mangan exclaims show shone light of understanding hitherto dark , musty corners of ignorance criticises final episode concentrating on blair s people s princess speech after diana s death.

in 2009, marr s publisher, macmillan publishers, sued libel activist erin pizzey after book history of modern britain claimed had once been part of militant group angry brigade staged bomb attacks in 1970s. pizzey became opponent of group , threatened report activities police when discussed intention of bombing biba, lively fashion store. publisher recalled , destroyed offending version of book, , republished error removed.
