the estate known since 14th century. during 15th century, stone keep erected defensive purposes johan kristensson vasa, grandfather of future king of sweden gustav vasa. stone tower still forms core of castle complex. central tower built @ middle of 15th century. subsequently stayed in vasa family, , during reign of gustav vasa expanded fortress surrounding wall, still partially preserved. time, castle began used state prison, example field marshal, privy council member , governor of narva , ivangorod carl henriksson horn af kanckas sat imprisoned after being condemned treason. famous prisoner of castle king eric xiv of sweden, imprisoned brother, john iii of sweden. eric xiv imprisoned in 1574 , died in captivity there in 1577. quite possibly murdered @ instigation of brother.
the castle stayed within royal family until 1641, when through exchange became property of banér family, remained owners until 1729. during ownership of gustaf carlsson banér, castle in 1660s transformed baroque palace. architect, possibly erik dahlbergh, incorporated medieval keep in palace. large-scale reconstruction took place in 1825–32, under guidance of architect carl christoffer gjörwell. renovated in 1901–08.
