located in building 30 @ johnson space center (known manned spacecraft center until 1973), houston mcc first used in june 1965 gemini 4. housed 2 primary rooms known mission operation control rooms (mocr, pronounced moh-ker ). these 2 rooms controlled gemini, apollo, skylab, , space shuttle flights 1998. each consisted of four-tier auditorium, dominated large map screen, which, exception of apollo lunar flights, had mercator projection of earth, locations of tracking stations, , three-orbit sine wave track of spacecraft in flight. each mocr tier specialized, staffed various controllers responsible specific spacecraft system.

mocr 1, housed on second floor of building 30, used apollo 7, skylab , apollo-soyuz test project missions. mocr 2 used other gemini , apollo flights (except gemini 3) , located on third floor. flight control room apollo 11, first manned moon landing, mocr 2 designated national historic landmark in 1985. last used in 1992 flight control room sts-53 , subsequently converted entirely apollo-era configuration , preserved historical purposes. several support wings, listed in national register of historic places apollo mission control center .
