prehistory

changde known many paleolithic , neolithic sites. 500 of them have been discovered date. in 1984 neolithic human settlements discovered in li county, part of changde. in 1988, pengtoushan site excavated leading identification of pengtoushan culture . site contains earliest evidence of settled village yet discovered in china. archeological research 2011 suggests settlement called shanlonggang, part of pengtoushan civilization, may have cultivated rice 8,000-9,000 years ago, making possible birthplace of rice cultivation.

in historical times centre governments controlled mountain tribes of western hunan. county, named linyuan, established there in 2nd century bc.

in han dynasty area called wuling county . in sui dynasty, called langzhou. during song dynasty, called dingcheng. in tang dynasty (618–907) became seat of lang prefecture. in 1117, changde county established, , around 1165, changde superior prefecture established. name changde has been used city ever since. status retained until 1912, when superior prefecture abolished , city became county seat.

19th , 20th centuries

in late 19th century changde became prosperous commercial center , chief agricultural central market of yuan river basin. many chinese firms, , — after 1905, when opened foreign trade — foreign firms well, maintained branches there buy rice, cotton, tung oil, , timber, changde s economic influence reached out northern guizhou, southwestern hubei, , parts of southeastern sichuan province. merchants of taho quarter of city controlled of northwestern hunan economy, , in 20th century changde second city of hunan, after changsha.
