as major in royal artillery majendie investigated explosion on 2 october 1874 in regent s canal when barge tilbury , carrying 6 barrels of petroleum , 5 tons of gunpowder blew up, killing crew , destroying macclesfield bridge , cages @ nearby london zoo. appointed companion of order of bath (cb) in 1875 framing bill became explosives act, 1875 , , knight commander of order of bath in 1895. advice during fenian dynamite campaign of 1881–85 officially recognised having contributed saving of lives. after victoria station bombed on 26 february 1884 defused bomb clockwork mechanism might have gone off @ moment.


in october 1886 majendie visited united states observe petroleum industry there , examine regulations regarding storage , distribution of product. caricature of majendie leslie ward ( spy ) appeared in vanity fair on 23 april 1892. publications included among pandies (1859), ammunition. descriptive treatise on different projectiles, charges, fuses, rockets, &c. (1867), arms , ammunition of british service (1868), , official guide explosives act (1877).


majendie married adelaide frances grylls (1841–1866) , had 2 children, daughter , captain henry grylls majendie (1865–1900) killed during boer war while serving rifle brigade.


vivian dering majendie died of heart failure in 1898 while visiting sister in oxford.
