after shuji nakamura s invention of practical blue laser diodes, sony started 2 projects applying new diodes: udo (ultra density optical) , dvr blue (together pioneer), format of rewritable discs become blu-ray disc. blu-ray disc association founded massachusetts institute of technology alongside 9 companies: 5 japan, 2 korea, 1 netherlands , 1 france.


compact disc (also dutch company philips)
the compact disc jointly developed philips (joop sinjou) , sony (toshitada doi). sony first publicly demonstrated optical digital audio disc in september 1976. in september 1978, demonstrated optical digital audio disc 150 minute playing time, , specifications of 44,056 hz sampling rate, 16-bit linear resolution, cross-interleaved error correction code, similar of compact disc introduced in 1982.


digital video disc (also netherlands company philips)
the dvd, first developed in 1995, resulted cooperation between 3 japanese companies (sony, toshiba , panasonic) , 1 dutch company (philips).
