washington selected los angeles rams in fifth round (137th overall) of 1988 nfl draft, after dropping because tore same knee ligament junior , senior.


on november 6, 1989, placed on injured reserve list thigh injury suffered in ninth game against minnesota vikings. activated on december 28, in time playoffs. replaced injured vince newsome @ free safety in nfc title game , posted 9 unassisted tackles, during 3-30 loss against san francisco 49ers.


playing sparingly reserve during first 2 years in league, rams left him unprotected—eligible sign team—under plan b free agency @ end of 1989 season.


dallas cowboys

on march 30, 1990, signed in plan b free agency dallas cowboys, became 1 of hardest hitting defensive backs in league, earning nickname drive-by . though started 10 games @ strong safety, tied team lead in interceptions (3).


in 1991, became regular starter @ strong safety. next year, began season starter until cowboys acquired thomas everett. although relegated briefly bench, knee injury ray horton allowed him take on role of free safety (9 starts) , finish tied team lead 3 interceptions. in super bowl xxvii against buffalo bills, made interception in first quarter, resulted in first cowboys touchdown , began turnover fest-a super bowl record nine.


washington lost starting spot during 1993 training camp, because of emergence of second year safety darren woodson. throughout season, washington reserve , nickel defensive back. in super bowl xxviii buffalo bills ran 3 receiver single formation , cowboys base defense of day in nickel (5 defensive backs), washington started game @ free safety. made best of starting opportunity recording fumble return touchdown, causing fumble recovered leon lett , interception.


in 1994, departure of thomas everett opened door washington start 16 games @ natural position free safety, tie team lead 5 interceptions , register 101 tackles (fifth on team). defensive signal caller cowboys when team top-ranked defense in league (1992 , 1994).


washington redskins

on march 2, 1995, signed free agent contract washington redskins , started 12 games season. year included incident @ infamous green fence @ rfk stadium, in washington attempted punch redskin fan giving him grief subpar play prior week. released redskins on august 13, 1996.


washington played in nfl 8 seasons , intercepted 17 passes.
