a second section of infantrymen preparing go ashore prince david off bernières-sur-mer, france, 6 june 1944.


upon arrival in clyde in february 1944, prince david taken clydebank final fitting out. after completion, prince david , prince henry joined combined operations command @ cowes, isle of wright.


at cowes on 21 april 2 canadian landing ships joined flotillas of assault landing craft. in addition, there arrived within next few days 3 canadian flotillas of larger infantry landing craft make cross-channel voyage under own power. during may, series of intense, large-scale training exercises took place combining canadian craft many more royal navy , united states navy.

on d-day, 6 june 1944, prince david disembarked 418 troops, including elements of le régiment de la chaudière, royal marines , detachment of british pioneers on mike , nan beaches in juno sector. first lowered 2 royal navy craft carried in addition own. mission provide supporting small-arms fire , clear mines , obstacles in advance of assault craft. canadian landing craft followed form craft other canadian flotillas. h-hour set 7.25, , after delay of twenty minutes more favourable tide in juno sector, prince david s landing craft started hour-long trip beaches.


over course of day, 1 of craft had been crippled, sunk or beached high , dry. 1 remaining assault craft made way prince david, charging tank carrier forced on obstacle, tore out bottom , sank @ once. outbound lighter ferried crew prince david. wounded on board , unable retrieve of landing craft, prince david sailed southampton, ending d-day involvement. both ships made 4 more reinforcement trips normandy, 1 on 18 june , 3 in july.
