nier: automata action role-playing game in players take role of combat androids yorha units across open world environment. in addition standard navigation on foot, using special item allows player summon wild animal ride, , in scenarios pilot flying mech fight enemies. previous game, during navigation in environments, camera shifts standard third-person perspective overhead or side-scrolling view. areas include platforming elements, requiring player navigate via jumping between platforms or on obstacles. player can complete side quests non-playable characters found throughout world. shops available in hub locations allow player purchase items, including consumables recover health.

as player progress, gain experience levels, increasing health, defense, , attack power. character progression handled through chips, items installed onto player characters modify attributes; these chips provide benefits ranging altering hud, granting status buffs. number of chips can installed @ once limited how many slots available. chips can either purchased shops, or picked defeated enemies. if player dies, respawn @ previous save point. player can find original body, , either retrieve items , experience left gain bonus, or attempt repair it. depending on player s success, body either resurrected temporary ally, or enemy player can defeat bonus. online features enabled, bodies of other players can retrieved or resurrected @ location in died.
