according safdie, building definition physical symbol of peace in capital s skyline , needed convey spirit of peace. safdie stated: m not 1 believes in overt symbolism, sense of building dedicated peace sense of lightness of being,...it should serene building. should not aggressive building. should full of light. safdie achieved designing glass curtain wall facing lincoln memorial , billowing glass ceiling. ceiling 1 of building elements in common safdie s design yitzhak rabin center in israel. 8 inches (20 cm) thick roof made of 1,482 white glass panels , supported steel frames while interior of roof covered translucent plastic film. opaque , white during day , glows @ night.


there 2 main entrances building, 1 facing constitution avenue, , facing 23rd street nw. building made of acid-etched precast-concrete , resembles limestone. design centered around 2 atria, large 1 facing national mall designed public, , smaller private 1 staff overlooks potomac river. larger atrium, george p. shultz great hall, measures 11,800 sq ft (1,100 m) , features 80 ft (24 m) high glass curtain wall facing national mall. 230-seat frank c. carlucci iii auditorium, jacqueline , marc leland atrium, , 20,000 sq ft (1,900 m) global peacebuilding center, interactive museum dedicated peacemaking, accessible via atrium. roof on great hall, designed convey dove s wings, called ansary peace dove. second atrium, known international women’s commons, measures 3,600 sq ft (330 m) , lined offices, library, meeting rooms, conference center, , farooq kathwari amphitheatre. roof on atrium simplified version of ansary peace dove. there 2,000 sq ft (190 m) outdoor terrace , adjoining boardroom facing lincoln memorial. three-story underground parking garage can accommodate 230 vehicles; 140 of spaces reserved navy personnel.
