Overview Choropleth map

incorrect (population, left) , correct (population density, right) application of choropleth data boston, massachusetts

the dasymetric technique can thought of compromise approach in many situations. broadly speaking, choropleths represent 2 types of data: spatially extensive or spatially intensive.

spatially extensive data things populations. population of uk might 65 million, not accurate arbitrarily cut uk 2 halves of equal area , population of each half of uk 32.5 million.
spatially intensive data things rates, densities , proportions, can thought of conceptually field data averaged on area. though uk s 60 million inhabitants occupy area of 240,000 km, , population density therefore 250/km, arbitrary halves of equal area not both have same population density.

another common error in choropleths use of raw data values represent magnitude rather normalized values produce map of densities. problematic because eye naturally integrates on areas of same color, giving undue prominence larger polygons of moderate magnitude , minimizing significance of smaller polygons high magnitudes. compare circled features in maps @ right.
